Telecommunications, radio and television are key to communication and in spite of the dead hand of a GPO determined to stick with the old and tested, British companies made significant advances in technology. Radio boomed until the transistor and Hong Kong drowned out British producers. As so often Britain was first in Europe with television but this put it at a disadvantage to those who followed with the benefit of later technology. Government welcomed Japanese companies keen to manufacture in the UK. Marconi, EMI and Thorn played significant roles in British television. Plessey positioned itself well in telecoms but was bought by GEC and Siemens, eventually ending up as Siemens Communication.
