British Manufacturing History

My exploration of the story of British Manfacturing

Food and Drink

The period began with brands loved from childhood consolidating.

United Biscuits embraced much of that industry; Cadbury and Schweppes combined. As elsewhere much ownership moved abroad: Rowntree to Nestle.

UK corporates did however gather other brands to themselves: Premier Foods, Associated British Foods. Unilever remains a cross border success embracing well loved brands. The sector has bucked the trend and has grown and is now the largest sector in UK manufacturing as a result of the move to ever more processed food including vegetarian and vegan.

The National Food Strategy presents as challenge as the nation suffers more and more from obesity.
