My wife is a glass designer maker and I have spent many hours in hot marquees and cold exhibition centres around the country supporting her in her sales effort. I have got to know many other makers and have gained an understanding of this significant, if little known, sector.
I have put this chapter together from this primary research helped by introductions from Sarah James who has for twenty years run craft fares around the country. I was also helped in my understanding of Birmingham’s jewellery quarter by my old friend and renowned jeweller Norman Cherry.
A key question has been the interface between designer/maker and manufacturer. A number of the designer/makers I know became too successful to meet demand and so they outsourced manufacturing either in the UK or China. Challenges were encountered in both routes and I write of these.
